In Alcoholics Anonymous and other 12 Step recovery programs based on its model, the term “King Baby” is used to refer to the demanding, immature ego and unconscious attitudes motivated by infantile desires. Adapted from the Freudian phrase “His Majesty, the baby,” the King Baby archetype positions oneself at the center of the universe, vacillating between polarities of omnipotence and helplessness, grandiosity and self-deprecation. Behavior patterns designed to garner external validation and conceal deep feelings of shame and inadequacy.

The following is a list of King Baby characteristics: (1986)

1. often become angry at or afraid of authority figures and will attempt to work them against each other in order to get their own way
2. seek approval and frequently lose their own identities in the process
3. are able to make a good first impression but are unable to follow through
4. have difficulty accepting personal criticism and become threatened and angry when criticized
5. have addictive personalities and are driven to extremes
6. are self-rejecting or self-alienated
7. are often immobilized by anger and frustration and are rarely satisfied
8. are usually lonely even when surrounded by people
9. are chronic complainers who blame others for what's wrong with their lives
10. feel unappreciated and think they don't fit in
11. see the world as a jungle filled with selfish people who "aren't there" for them
12. see everything as a catastrophe, a life-and-death situation
13. judge life in absolutes: black or white, right or wrong
14. live in the past while fearful of the future
15. have strong feelings of dependence and exaggerated fears of abandonment
16. fear failure and rejection and don't try new things that they might not do well
17. are obsessed with money and material things
18. dream big plans and schemes and have little ability to make them happen
19. cannot tolerate illness in themselves or others
20. prefer to charm superiors and intimidate subordinates
21. believe rules and laws are for others, not for themselves
22. often become addicted to excitement, life in the fast lane
23. hold emotional pain within and lose touch with their feelings

King Baby traits are indicative of emotional immaturity and weak ego strength with a paradoxically exaggerated sense of self-importance. In their extreme form, these manifest in traits characteristic of narcissistic personality disorder: grandiosity, a need for admiration, superiority, lack of empathy, entitlement, and manipulative interpersonal behavior.

King Baby traits are indicators of impaired emotional and psychological development common in contexts of early life trauma, such as is seen in adult children raised in alcoholic and dysfunctional families. Family systems reproduce trauma by lacking the capacity to meet the developmental needs of children raised within them, who then lack the capacity for emotional maturity as adults, and the cycle continues. At the societal level, trauma patterns of unmet needs and the posturing facade of dominance is rewarded and reinforced. In the words of Resmaa Menakem, “Many times trauma in a person decontextualized over time can look like personality. Trauma in a family decontextualized over time can look like family traits, trauma decontextualized in a people over time can look like culture.”

King Baby traits are also consistent with the characteristics of White Supremacy Culture: sense of urgency, belief in only one right way, either/or thinking, paternalism, power hoarding, “I’m the only one” individualism, success as bigger and more. White Supremacy Culture is both traumatizing and rooted in unhealed trauma, at the collective level at a global scale.

Alchemizing the King Baby archetype and healing the wounded inner child is a process of getting “right sized,” strengthening a sense of self that replaces vacillation between self-deprecation and self-aggrandizement with self-love and acceptance of one’s imperfection. The Sun must be eclipsed, the ego surrendered within an alembic of grace, for this transformation to occur. Such a surrender often comes about through an experience of pain, a rock bottom that provides a chance to confront shame and encounter the wounded parts of self. Here in the wound, said Persian mystic Rumi, is where the Light enters.

The Leo solar eclipse opens a portal for alchemizing the King Baby archetype within, at the personal and collective level. The Sun is eclipsed, briefly diminishing the solar influence to give way to release. Solar eclipses are associated with the alchemical stage nigredo, a darkening of the external light as transformation occurs in the hidden depths. The darkness invites surrender to forces greater than individual egos, giving way to a deeper source of inner illumination.

Tibetan Buddhist teacher Chögyam Trungpa Rinpochet taught the view of the Shambhala sun, that the fundamental nature of all of life is basic goodness. Awareness of this basic goodness grows through the practice of mindfulness of the beauty in small details of life and in the freshness of each moment. He wrote, “Discovering real goodness comes from appreciating very simple experiences. We are not talking about how good it feels to make a million dollars or finally graduate from college or buy a new house, but we are speaking here of the basic goodness of being alive—which does not depend on our accomplishments or fulfilling our desires.” (1984)

Through expanded awareness of the basic goodness of life and oneself in meditative practice, dissatisfaction and perfectionism soften into acceptance, fear is transformed to courage. Arrogance and self-importance are transformed to humility. Selfishness is transformed to compassion. By cultivating courage, compassion, and humility, the ego is placed in service to something greater, beyond the narrow focus of the individual.

The Leo eclipse represents a symbolic dethroning of the tyrant king and a transformation of the alchemical Child as the Sun is reborn. In Leo, the releasing valve of the South Node flushes the collective system of egoic individualism as the North Node in Aquarius awakens a hunger for collectivism. For the broader view of we, not me. “The way out of the King Baby trap is, ‘I Can’t, We Can’ thinking.” (1986) It reminds us that alone we go fast, but together we go far.
